How Deep is the Ocean: I like the lyrics of this song and the way they have many different layers. The song can be sung to a child, a lover, a mother or father, or to a friend. It tells us how precious each of us is. I have also sung this song in Church as a song from God to us. Christ in You: Mike Scott’s original version of this song captured me with its vulnerability and transparency from the first moment I heard it. The words come over clear as a bell, and with them he breaks down our resistance to our own vulnerability. It is with reverence that I sing the song after him. Along with my musical arrangers I have tried not to make my interpretation too like Mike Scott’s version – we wouldn’t manage it anyway! We decided to try a somewhat different approach: I imagine a street in the Grünerløkka district of Oslo – a colourful street where there are many nationalities and various types of people strolling along. They are dressed differently and have different ways and speeds of walking. And we stand there as street musicians and sing to them: “I’m gonna look twice at you, until I see the Christ in you!” Isn’t She Lovely: Stevie Wonder has created a beautiful melody – and particularly good lyrics. I think the words deserve more attention than they are given in the original version, though it is a fantastic version in which Stevie sings spontaneously and joyously to his lively accompaniment. I wanted to experiment by giving the song the quietest and calmest approach possible so that I could try to capture the wonder of holding a new-born child! Every Breath is Yours: Mike Scott has created an exquisite and intense love song. The repetition of the simple lyrics allows much to be read between the lines. There is a maturity in the way he expresses his feelings, and the lyrics bear witness to deep experience, hardship, laughter, joy, frustration.... . And the key person surrenders all this to another individual and is transformed: “I give myself to you, beloved, the self that I thought I was....” I find it so fascinating that we are formed by those we spend our time with. It is through such closeness that we also get to know ourselves – our real selves.
